Dear TaxMama:

My fiance has an old tax bill that he wishes to pay, but is concerned about contacting the IRS because of a divorce and moving out of state, he lost track of what he owed.

In the meantime, if we get married, will I be responsible for HIS old bill? Everything that is in my name should stay that way, we have both agreed on that, so is there a problem with it reflecting on me?

He plans on contacting them via mail to find out the entire situation of what he owes.

Thanks so much.

We are waiting because of this situation .....

Pat

Hi Pat,

You're going to have a tough time, financially, until your fiance resolves his tax problem.

Personally, I would keep my bank accounts and credit cards, even my credit, separated until he's all done.

If you file tax returns together, you'll fall under the definition of injured spouse. Read the information, and the IRS pages suggested here.

Why would your finance do something so chicken as to try to resolve his tax problems by writing to IRS. CALL THEM! 800-829-1040

Deal with it head on. Talk to them and find out just what they want - and do it. OR get the help of a tax professional, who might reduce his tax liability by filing any missing returns correctly - or fixing any tax problems that resulted from his divorce.

Writing back and forth takes forever. Just get it over with as quickly as possible.

You're wise to wait.

I've had lots of guys come to me because their fiance's wouldn't marry them until they got their taxes all straightened out. And you know what? The guys turned out to be pretty good catches afterwards.

While your friend is at it, have him resolve his other state issues too. You don't want surprises just when everything is looking good, do you?

Good luck!

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
