» From: New Jersey Dear TaxMama: My father was working for Lexus. At the time they were just giving him checks from the company. They never gave him any 1099 for 95, 97, 98. So what can he do to get a 1099 from them? He has a big tax problem because he never filed tax returns for those years Joel ![]() Dear Joel, If the company issued 1099s, ask them for a copy. Or IRS will have it on file. Use Form 4506 to request them. If the company never issued 1099s, ask them to give your father a report of his total income. If he can't get that, pull out his bank statements and add up the deposits. Remove anything from your total that obviously wasn't income (like bounced checks re-deposited, or errors corrected or loans deposited, or transfers from credit cards deposited into the account.) The rest of the deposits are his income. Can't find bank statements? Call the bank and order them. Can't find the bank? Or the bank is out of business? Or Dad never had a bank account? See a good local tax professional who knows how to reconstruct income and prepare prior year tax returns. The Tax Pro will help you get an IRS hold on collections and work with you to straighten this out. Take good care of Dad. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
