» From: Seattle, WA Dear TaxMama: If you haven't filed taxes in the last ten years, and start filing taxes in the eleventh year, will the IRS pursue the prior ten years even if taxes were not due? Lynn ![]() Dear Lynn, You betcha! How would IRS know you don't owe taxes for those years if you haven't told them. Prepare all those old returns and get them filed. If you don't owe anything, you won't have penalties. And if you had refunds coming to you, well, my friend, you've lost all the refunds that are over 3 years old. Remember, even though it might not seem like it, IRS can't read minds. Like with all successful, long term relations - you must communicate. That's what a tax return is - communication. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
