Letting Attorneys Bid On Your Business
line

The folks at LegalMatch called me this week. They told me about their legal referral service. It sounds as if it operates a great deal like the 1-800-DENTIST referral service. Attorneys pay a fee to particpate. They are interviewed and screened to ensure they meet certain criteria. The main difference is instead of calling, you post the details of your case and let attorneys make you offers on their services. You can interview them, and shop price and qualifications. It looks like a viable idea.

Many of you keep asking me for referrals. And while I know many well-qualified attorneys, with various skills, (mostly in California) they are often too expensive for some of the smaller things you want done. So, how about trying out this service? Before you actually hire an attorney you know nothing about, though, do ask for references and call them up to see if they are happy with the service they're getting.

And if you already know what you need, like a will or living trust, this may be a good place to do some shopping.

There is no charge to try it out ... and they swear to keep your information confidential. However, have the sense not to put actual data into the query. Just put enough information so they can give you a quote for their work.

I'm serious, people send ME their Social Security numbers and other sensitive information that I never want to see or receive. So, use common sense.

But, yes, there are things you need to look into taking care of, like living wills in case you get ill, child custody if anything happens to you or your spouse ....

» NAME CHANGES

Incidentally, speaking of legal issues, I am coming across e-filing rejections because of some of my clients' names don't match their Social Security records. One woman has been married over 15 years and still hasn't changed it. So, if you changed your name because you got married, divorced, became a citizen, or just didn't like your name, update your name with all the agencies. I just found a nifty kit that will do this for you. Oh, they have a will kit and some other handy tools.
