(We have been talking about HSA's. (See the discussion from TaxMama's Issue 244.) The following question is like many coming in this week.)

» From: Mount Vernon, WA

Dear TaxMama:

Just read your Q&A about HSA's, after calling all the banks in my area (only one had even heard of HSA's) so I think folks need more assistance than that about how to set up accounts.

In my state, you get no assistance from the Insurance Comissioners office either. They have no info about insurance plans that qualify or accounts.

I'd love it if you'd address some of the issues of states where there may or may not be plans that qualify, WA being one of these. I have a high deductible plan with an annual out of pocket that fits, so thought it was a correct plan, but now I see in your answer that you can't have a co-pay. I hadn't even found that in the IRS publication I read.

These HSA accounts sound great but as a potential consumer, I'm really frustrated so far!

Thanks for any light you can shed on this one.

Katherine

Hi Katherine,

Remember, they were just signed into law in mid-December, when all the insurance company executives were on vacation.

They are scrambling to come up with product.

Have you checked with Fortis? (in the article) They are operating in about 40 states. I don't know which.

And do a Google search online for

    - HSA Washington -DC -"D.C."

The results look very promising.

Anyone else looking, put in HSA and your state.

NEWS FLASH! I just spoke to the folks at eHealthInsurance.com and they have set up a special section on their site just for HSAs. Click on this banner.

When you get to the site, enter your zip code. On the next page, you'll find a link to their HSAs, on the right hand side.

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
