for Prisoner Release Programs Last week, we talked about Bush's proposal. » A reader sent us this note: Dear Eva: I have no direct experience with prisons, but one of my employees spent a few years in prison here in Texas. He said that they had a lot of training classes, and he would purposefully fail each class. Why? As you might know, it can get pretty hot here during the summer, and in most of the units he was in, the only air conditioning was in the warden's office, the infirmary, and in the classrooms (for the benefit of the civilian teachers, not for the inmates). Once you pass a class, you couldn't take it again, so where is the incentive? I can't vouch that this is true, but he would have had no reason to lie. On an unrelated topic, I love your newsletter. Thanks, Greg ![]() Hi Greg, Hey, thanks for the kind words. How utterly astonishing about the classes. The teachers must know this. Why not simply encourage them to do well, then offer more advanced classes for those who succeed? They're all sitting there taking up space, anyway .... would it hurt if they were taught something? Well, we'll just get our voices out there. Someone is bound to listen. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
