Dear TaxMama:

Which 5 states have the lowest income taxes and what are their percentages (on average)?

Dave

TaxMama Replies
Hi Dave,

That tends to change as new laws are written in states.

But if you want 5 or so states with NO personal income taxes:

  • Alaska (if you live there, they even give you money back)
  • Florida
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • Texas
  • Washington (state, not DC)

You may want to do some searching on Kiplinger.com Sometimes, they run articles that analyze all the states' taxes for the best place to retire.

They take into account more than just income tax. They evaluate property taxes and sales taxes, too. Some states with no income taxes make up for it by having really high property, asset or sales taxes.

Their goal is to identify the states where retirees can spend the smallest part of their budgets on taxes, overall.

I hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
