» From: Grand Island, NB Dear TaxMama: I have a brother who lives in Kansas and is 60 years old. He has a developmental disability. He doesn't drive. And he needs assistance to go to the doctor, get grocries etc. He lives 200 miles away. I am his Power of Attorney. Are any of my expenses deductable? Nancy ![]() Unless he is your dependent, on your tax return, sorry, no. But, he may pay you for your time. And then, those expenses are deductible to him, as medical expenses, for caregivers. I'd be very careful about taking him as a dependent on my tax return. Doing that may make you liable for his care expenses. Also, he might lose the government benefits if he becomes your dependent. I don't know if taking him as a dependent will affect the benefits. So, please, do look into that before considering it. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
