Dear TaxMama:

If I hire someone as an independent contractor who lives in another country (non-US citizen, will be doing work outside the US), do I have to report anything on income paid to them ... like a 1099 or anything?

Jennifer

TaxMama Replies
Dear Jennifer,

If they are out of the USA, you don't need to get their US ID numbers. Obviously, they haven't any.

And since they don't work in the USA, you don't need to send them 1099s. You also don't need to take any withholding from their pay for US taxes.

Yes, I did check with IRS to make sure.

Best wishes,
