Taxes and E-Bay Sales
line

We recently had a question about sales tax and e-Bay.

<One of our Tax Pros Comments>

Dear TaxMama:

You had a question about taxes and eBay sales from a reader in Tampa. I'm in Florida, too, in the next county over.

The Florida Department of Revenue is very interested in having sales taxes collected on those sales, and it is the sellers' responsibility to collect and remit to DoR.

Here in Florida the State has a 6% sales tax and counties may have local option. Tampa is in Hillsborough County and the last I knew had a local option of 1/4% for a total 6.25%.

There are some other interesting elements and variations depending on where delivery is made in Florida, and the seller is responsible for collecting and remitting all 67 counties' sales taxes, in so far as relevant.

The penalty and interest (as usual) gets very expensive.

DoR would like to tax those out of state sales, but as of the moment all they can push for is in-state.

I have a number of Internet clients and they have variations on this theme but I always look for their sales taxes and sometimes need to resolve issues with DoR. Naturally, they are always willing to accept money!!!

Also, both Tampa and Hillsborough County, as well as Temple Terrace, the other city in the county, have occupational license taxes, so wherever the writer lives or has his business s/he will be subject to those.
