Tax Information With A Mother's Touch Published by Eva Rosenberg, MBA, EA |

While I know this isn't a question anyone brought up here, it's a question that comes up in the course of doing tax returns - all the time. Especially with people who drive a great deal. Those parking and traffic tickets. Not only do they cost so much more these days, even if you go to traffic school, but you can't take a deduction for the cost. Not even if you're a professional driver or trucker. Then, to make it worse, if you have an honest objection, you have to show up to fight it. Talk about more costs to take time from work, or rush down to the courts and kill an evening. Get over it, my friends, government fines and penalties are just that. Slaps on the wrists. They are not tax deductible. Period. But, I've got good news for you. No, Congress hasn't changed the law. Tickets still aren't deductible. The courts are entering the 21st century. A trend has started to enable the public to communicate with the courts via e-mail. Some courts even let attorneys file briefs online. CNN writes about a court in Yakima, Washington California has 5 counties allowing you to pay online with links to other counties that have websites. Which means, if there's a website, there's probably a way to e-mail those courts and, at least, ask them to consider your explanation. (I wonder if my friend, Marvin had anything to do with setting up the L.A. system?) Running a Google search for 'parking tickets online' yields over 300,000 responses - It includes places like New York, New Jersey, Boston, Seattle, Spotsylvania, Virginia - all on the first page. You may want to check to see if your town has an online service. Next time you have any kind of court action, you may just want to see if your court has a website. They may offer online filings and the ability to search their databases for public records. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama P.S. I will admit, I always used to send in my excuses or explanations by mail - and did get favorable responses. There was the time ... |
