» From: Austin, TX Dear TaxMama: I had to pay a big fat estate tax when my parents died. I haven't received a letter of closing (or audit) yet and it's been over 6 months since I paid the tax. What can I do now? Kris ![]() And you won't receive one. They have three years to do that. Unless, of course, you send them a letter requesting a prompt assessment. Then, they have only 18 months from that date to audit the file and close it. If they don't audit it within that time, they can't do it at all. So, have your tax pro look up the procedure, the code section to cite and the address to send it to (new, since IRS 'stood up' in October 2001) and make the request. Usually, once I do that, they respond within six months with a clean bill of health. Good luck. So sorry to learn of your parents' death. Best wishes, Eva Rosenberg Your TaxMama |
