What's My Status?

» From: Lynwood, CA

Dear TaxMama:

I got married on February 14, 2002. I'm also currently pregnant. My baby is due November 23, 2002.

I claim single and 0 dependents.

My husband is a non resident and is not working due to the fact he has not received work authorization from INS. We don't own a house. We sublet a little house from a couple.

How should I file for the upcoming tax year?

Elvia

TaxMama Replies
Dear Elvia,

Congratulations - on all counts! Sounds like life is starting out nicely.

Somehow, I get the feeling that your husband lives with you?

You can file as married, filing jointly. Even if he's not working.

By the time December rolls around, I'm sure your husband will have papers and be blithely working and supporting you and your baby.

Take good care of each other!

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
