Dear TaxMama:

My wife and I bought a house 10 months ago.

We have done some home improvements on it. And I was wondering if that can be treated as a tax deductible?

Thanks for your help!

Magnus

TaxMama Replies
Dear Magnus,

I'm sure you'll enjoy the improvements tremendously.

But there are no deductions for those costs.

Hold on to those receipts in a permanent file though. You never know when that house will appreciate more than $500,000. If it does, you may want those receipts to reduce your taxable profit.

They'll also be useful if you decide to start renting out your house and need to use depreciation.

Best wishes,

Eva Rosenberg
