Last week, we had this question and response: Dear Tax Mama, Who by law is allowed to take your refund if you have an outstanding bill? Jodi TaxMama's Response can be found here This week, we have the good fortune to provide you with a definitive answer from our kind Advocate in Texas: Hello Taxmama, Hope things are great. With the exception of applying a refund to IRS taxes, the IRS no longer runs the "grab your refund" show... That job now belongs to Financial Management Services (FMS), which can be found at www.fms.treas.gov 1-800-304-3107. Call them to find out if and how much of your refund will be taken. The IRS is told after the fact. Texas Taxpayer Advocate |
