The Job Costs Us

From: Spring Lake, MI

Dear TaxMama,

I'm doing my taxes on Turbo Tax and I can't find a place to put my husbands unreimbursed job related items. I file a schedule c for a small business and don't want his items to end up there. Any idea what to do?

Thanks
Linda

Dear Linda,

Even before you use TurboTax, you really need to understand the rules. Do a bit of reading - here is some free information from IRS's Publication 17

That way, when you do enter expenses on Form 2106 the Employee Business Expense form you'll do it correctly.

Although you're using it do-it-yourself software, it kind of helps to know what the tax returns and forms look like and how they work. Please take a few minutes and look at the various forms that make up your own version of the tax return.

Best wishes,
