Dear TaxMama

Can Non Residents (NR - Resident of India) file their Taxes electronically? Suggest any websites that allows filing of tax returns online?

Dear Lakshmikanth,

You are presently living in the US. So there should be no problem filing your taxes electronically.

While I wouldn't normally recommend sites online for tax preparation .... for a whole bunch of quality, competence and security issues .... (and I have turned down 3 or 4 vendors that begged for TaxMama recommendations) at least TurboTax Online ought to be fine - if not, they certainly have enough assets so you could sue the company of there is a problem.

But, if are not familiar with US tax laws, really, it might be more advantageous to meet with a local tax professional.

I certainly wouldn't go to India and try to prepare my own tax reports there!

Even Isaac Asimov, who was quite a genius, preferred to have a tax professional handle his tax affairs. He felt there was too much to constantly learn to do it all himself. And you think you can just walk in and do it yourself?
